For too long, fossil fuel and other high-polluting industry interests have unduly influenced and undermined global climate negotiations, delaying urgent and necessary climate action— delay that frontline communities in the Pacific can no longer afford.
In this new briefing paper, Transparency International Australia highlights how transparency, conflict-of-interest safeguards, and protection from undue influence are essential for a pre-COP and COP31 that delivers credible outcomes. Drawing on recent COPs and the growing regional calls for reform, the paper outlines several practical integrity, transparency and accountability measures Australian and Pacific governments can action prior to, and during, pre-COP and COP31. With these measures, the paper argues that Australia and Pacific Island nations can together deliver a pre-COP that enhances the legitimacy of the process, delivers meaningful climate action that Pacific survival demands, and leaves a lasting global legacy.
In partnership with Transparency Solomon Islands, Transparency International New Zealand, Transparency Vanuatu and Transparency and Integrity Fiji, Strengthening Integrity to Safeguard Pacific Futures calls on Australia and Pacific Island governments to meet this moment with the leadership it demands.
