Australian miner exporting Russian coal raises questions on Australia’s sanctions regime

ASX listed Tigers Realm Coal quarterly updates shows the company still exporting Russian coal to Asia markets in the face of Australia’s sanctions regime, says anti-corruption group.

Tigers Realm Coal’s latest production report outlined 410kt of coal was mined during the June quarter, a 25% increase compared to March quarter 2023, 277kt of which was delivered to port. Russian coal is a sanctioned good under Australia’s sanctions regime so the report raises questions about the company’s operations and effectiveness of Australia’s sanctions.

Clancy Moore, CEO of Transparency International Australia made the following statements:

“Tigers Realm Coal’s quarterly statement clearly shows the company digging up, and exporting, Russian coal most likely bound for China.

As Russian coal is a sanction good under Australia’s sanctions regime this could be a potential breach of sanctions.

What’s more, the continued operations of Tigers Realm Coal would also appear to go against the stated objectives of Australia’s sanctions in Russia.”
