Thumbnail Submission New Dev Policy

Summary

Transparency International Australia welcomes the opportunity to make a submission to DFAT’s External Advisory Group regarding the creation of the new International Development Policy. The new policy will set the long-term direction for Australia’s international development program, and provide a framework for Australia to meet present and future development needs.

In its submission, Transparency International Australia addresses rising authoritarianism, shrinking civic space and how corruption impacts on democracy and accountability. It also focuses on collective action for climate change and the energy transition. Throughout this submission we demonstrate the importance of addressing corruption and promoting good governance for democracy, inclusive development and poverty alleviation in the Indo-Pacific region.

SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDATIONS

Transparency International Australia offers 12 recommendations to inform Australia’s new International Development Policy by furthering good governance, strong civil society, alongside strong anti-corruption controls across DFAT operations, strategy and capacity development.

These recommendations include boosting inclusive development and effective governance linked to the Sustainable Development Goals; dedicating a set-proportion of ODA for strong civil society accountability and anti-corruption controls; and importantly, developing a whole of government anti-corruption strategy.

Through these efforts DFAT can constructively work alongside institutions and civil society actors to address weakness in Australia’s domestic and international anti-corruption efforts and support anti-corruption systems in the Indo-Pacific region.
